Many of us have been there...we start working out with the best intentions of getting results, but we can’t seem to get to the gym enough or life just gets in the way. Unfortunately, this happens all too often, but commitment and discipline are the most important things you can do to get consistency and results.
Think about it like this: if you consistently eat potato chips while sitting stagnant all day, you will gain body fat. Conversely, if you train 3 times per week, eat a balanced diet and take proper supplementation, you will gain muscle, reduce body fat and generally feel much better mentally and physically. The point here is that consistency works both ways and what you do most of the time matters most. You don’t have to be perfect, but if you are consistently doing the right things, you will make gains towards your goals.
This concept is essential for beginning weightlifters and people trying to get fit. There’s a commitment that needs to happen first and if you can’t commit, you might as well not even get started. After the commitment, it takes discipline to keep your commitment to working towards your fitness goals. If you have both of those things, you will have consistency and get results.
So how do you start?
As I was saying, it starts with a commitment. A decision that you are going to get to the gym “x” times per week, even if life throws you a curveball and you have to adjust. This adjustment is where discipline comes in. You will have times where you just have to figure out how to get to the gym but, hey, aren’t your goals worth it!?!? Next, figure out a workout you enjoy and get started. After you gain some consistency getting your workouts in, make a plan to start eating better. Once your exercise and diet are consistent, add a few key supplements to your diet to maximize the effectiveness of your workouts. Before you know it, you’ll be getting results, checking goals off your list and making new ones.
